We interviewed Pauline Distel from the brand Studio Chuma Paris, whose collection debutted last week at our online store. Find out more about her unique creation and craftsmanship.
1. When did you start your creative business, and how did it get started?
The studio's activity started full-time at the end of 2016, however it was my work as a designer in the previous years which led me to starting the studio. Initial creations have thus emerged in the course of my experiments before defining more precisely my approach and craftsmanship.
2. What are your technique and materials used?
I work mainly on projects where we find the association of craft techniques and new technologies. Laser cutting is the main implementation tool for my approach. It allows me to engrave and cut patterns previously drawn by hand or with the help of suitable software. The goal is to offer colorful, graphic and dynamic jewelry. The materials, plexiglass and wood, allow the use of new technologies while preserving a craft approach. Their characteristics make it possible to combine a modern and colorful spirit with the nature of raw materials. Thus the plexiglass offers a multitude of possibilities and wood allows me to highlight its natural aspects and textures.
3. Any favourite items in your collection and where did you draw your inspiration from?
The necklaces are for me an example which best represents the whole of my approach, the creation of pattern, cutting, engraving and the traditional technique of jewelry assembly. The style of my jewelry collection is very graphic and is mainly inspired by the current trends in design and architecture. Therefore, my pattern searching and concept defining are rarely done for the purpose of creating traditional jewelry but unique, structural and graphic pieces.
